spring-safety-tipsSpring time is a perfect time to clean, organize and get rid of unnecessary items in your house.

Spring cleaning generally involves a series of tasks from lifting and bending, to moving objects, climbing stairs or ladders as well as other physical tasks. Think Safety First when you start your spring cleaning.

Spring is also a great time to check if your safety plans are in place and your safety equipment is in working order.

  • Test your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide to make sure they work. Change batteries if necessary.
  • Replace light bulbs (outside and inside) and test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
  • Make sure you have someone to stabilize the ladder and assist you.
  • Store winter items properly.
  • Check your house for broken items and discard appropriately.
  • Clean out your medicine cabinet and dispose of any expired or unused medications properly.
  • Remember that as you are cleaning, dust and debris will become airborne and can cause irritation and difficulty breathing. Cleaning liquids can also cause irritation to the lungs and skin. Use a mask and gloves to protect yourself.
  • Check your fire extinguishers. Make sure safety seals, tamper indicators and maintenance tags are not broken or missing. Examine for signs physical damage, corrosion, leakage, or a clogged nozzle. Check the pressure gauge reading or indicator. It should be in the operable range or position. Recycle and replace if necessary.
  • Plan and practice your family escape plan.
  • Review your family emergency plan. A printable family emergency plan is available through ready.gov.
  • Check your first aid kits and replace any missing supplies.

Stratford EMS wants to remind you to think Safety First this spring. We hope you all have a wonderful spring season!
