9-1-1: Medical Emergencies – When to Call and What to Expect
A public education brochure from the National Academies of Emergency Dispatch and the American Safety & Health Institute. It explains when to call 9-1-1 for a medical emergency, with common warning signs like chest pain, trouble breathing, severe bleeding and allergic reactions. It also covers the questions a dispatcher will ask and why, and how to follow the dispatcher’s instructions until help arrives. The brochure includes tips for calling from a cell phone and teaching children to dial “nine-one-one,” and it encourages everyone to take a CPR and first aid course.
