Emergency Medical Care for Stratford
Stratford EMS is committed to providing high-quality, personalized and professional emergency medical care to the Town of Stratford. Since 1977, our team of dedicated EMTs, paramedics and support staff has stood ready to help residents, visitors, commuters and neighboring communities when they need us most. You can place your trust in Stratford EMS and the services we provide.
As the Town’s municipal emergency medical service, we respond to 9-1-1 medical emergencies 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Our care is guided by physician medical direction, current clinical protocols and a commitment to continuous quality improvement. Beyond the ambulance, we support major incidents, community events, public education and the training of the next generation of EMS professionals.
Emergency Medical Response
Every response begins with the Stratford Public Safety Communications Center, where trained emergency medical dispatchers gather information, coordinate the response and give instructions, such as CPR guidance, until help arrives. Stratford EMS then provides the level of care each patient needs.
- Advanced Life Support (ALS) ambulance: paramedics who can give medications, manage airways and monitor the heart for serious illness and injury.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) ambulance: EMTs who provide emergency care and safe transport to the hospital.
- Paramedic intercept: a paramedic meets a BLS ambulance to add advanced care when a patient needs it.
Our ambulances are equipped and configured identically, so crews can find what they need quickly in any vehicle. Equipment includes LIFEPAK 15 cardiac monitors, LUCAS mechanical CPR devices, powered stretchers and loading systems, and electronic patient care reporting on every unit.

Special Operations and Major Incident Response
Some emergencies require more people, equipment or specialized skills than a single ambulance can provide. Our specialized teams extend our capabilities for large incidents, crowded events and ceremonial duties.
- Special Operations Division (SOD): established in 1987 to respond to mass casualty incidents, SOD provides EMS command, treatment areas, firefighter rehabilitation and extra personnel and equipment for complex incidents and large gatherings.
- Medical Bike Team: bike patrols carrying first aid supplies, oxygen and an AED to reach patients quickly in crowds, on closed roads and at the beach.
- Honor Guard: established in 2013, the Honor Guard represents Stratford EMS at parades, memorial services and ceremonies.
Event Medical Support
Stratford EMS provides medical coverage at community events throughout the year, including Stratford Day, the Independence Day fireworks, the Memorial Day Parade, road races, and high school and youth sports. Depending on the size of the event, coverage may include ambulances, the Special Operations Division, the Medical Bike Team and members of our Explorer Post. Event organizers should contact us early in their planning.
Community Health and Preparedness
Building a safer, healthier Stratford starts before an emergency happens. Through education, outreach and partnerships, we help residents, schools and businesses prepare to act when it matters most.
- Public Access AED Program: register your AED with the Town so its location is in the 9-1-1 dispatch system, and get guidance from Stratford EMS on keeping it ready.
- Community Programs: blood pressure screenings, career days, touch-a-truck visits, the Citizens’ EMS Academy and other programs for schools, businesses and community groups.
- Training and Education: CPR and professional EMS courses through the Stratford EMS Training & Education Center (SEMSTEC).
