SEMS Medical Bike Unit (MBU)

The Stratford EMS Medical Bike Unit (MBU) was the first of its kind in the region. Our bike teams bring emergency medical care to places where an ambulance can’t easily reach a patient, such as dense crowds, closed roads and beach areas.

Where You’ll See Us

The Bike Team works as part of the Special Operations Division at events throughout the year, including:

  • Stratford Day

  • The Independence Day fireworks display

  • Beach patrols during the summer season

  • Other community events and large gatherings

In one summer season alone, the MBU patrolled more than 100 miles of south Stratford, from the beach areas up to Paradise Green.

Equipped to Respond

Each bike patrol carries:

  • First aid supplies

  • Oxygen

  • An automated external defibrillator (AED)

Riders can reach a patient quickly, start care, and coordinate with responding ambulance crews.

Specialized Training

Bike Team members complete the EMS Cyclist Course through the International Police Mountain Bike Association (IPMBA). The course covers safe riding in traffic and crowds, bike handling and patrol techniques for EMS providers.
