Who We Are

Stratford EMS (SEMS) is the Town of Stratford’s municipal, third-service EMS department and part of Connecticut’s Southwest EMS Region 1. We provide 9-1-1 emergency response, care and transport at both the Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Life Support (ALS) levels to a community of more than 52,000 residents. We respond to more than 7,500 9-1-1 emergencies each year.

A Diverse and Fast-Paced System

Stratford offers the variety and call volume that help clinicians grow:

  • Our summer population can double, thanks to our beaches and forest.
  • About 40% of our residents are over age 55.
  • Two major highways, two airports (fixed wing and rotor wing) and a rail station run through Town.
  • We serve a skilled nursing facility, an assisted living center and busy commercial and industrial areas.
  • Two trauma centers, including a burn center, are 5 to 8 minutes from our Town borders, so calls move quickly.

Safety Comes First

Safety is the foundation of how we work. Our fleet is standardized, and every vehicle is less than 8 years old. It includes AEV Sprinter and Type II ambulances and Ford Police Interceptor Utility response vehicles. Every vehicle is equipped with:

  • Apple iPad mobile data terminals and electronic patient care reporting
  • Stryker Power-LOAD systems, power cots and stair chairs
  • LUCAS mechanical CPR devices
  • Stryker LIFEPAK 15 monitor/defibrillators and AEDs
  • Ergonomic gear bags
  • Tactical ballistic protective gear

We also:

  • Use the Medical Priority Dispatch System (MPDS) for Emergency Medical Dispatch, and review and adjust response levels and modes regularly.
  • Are a designated HEARTSafe Workplace.
  • Issue P100 respirators to all staff.
  • Offer NAEMT EMS Safety and DT4EMS (Defensive Tactics for EMS) certification courses to all staff at no cost.

Training and Education

The Stratford EMS Training & Education Center (SEMSTEC) offers hundreds of live, virtual and online education opportunities each year. New team members are supported through our Field Training & Evaluation Program. Staff who hold EMS Instructor certification, or who are interested in teaching and coaching, can get involved in our education programs.

Ways to Join

SEMS offers three categories of membership and employment:

  1. Volunteer: CEVO-certified drivers, EMRs, EMTs, AEMTs and paramedics
  2. Per diem: EMTs, AEMTs and paramedics
  3. Full time: paramedics, operations supervisors and administrative staff

Volunteers: We accept volunteer applications year-round. Download the SEMS Volunteer Application, or pick one up at EMS Headquarters, 2712 Main Street, Stratford, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Completed volunteer applications can be returned to our Administration office at Headquarters.

Paid positions: Open positions are posted on this page and on the Town of Stratford Human Resources page. All applications for paid positions must be submitted to the Town of Stratford Human Resources Department, not to Stratford EMS. Human Resources is on the second floor of Town Hall, 2725 Main Street, Stratford, CT 06615.
