SEMS 804 – 2016 Type II Sprinter style ambulance

Stratford, CT (12/22/2015) – Stratford EMS is pleased to announce the acquisition of a new ambulance. This will be Stratford EMS’s first new van style ambulance since 2010.

911 requests for EMS services have been increasing each year. Stratford EMS is expected to finish 2015 having responded to nearly 7,000 calls.  The new ambulance, will be SEMS’s 7th ambulance, joining an existing fleet of six (6) and will allow SEMS to continue to meet the growing demands of the Stratford 911 system.

The new ambulance, designated “804”, was funded entirely through the EMS Enterprise Fund and will cost tax-payers nothing. The cost of the ambulance was $103,000.  The process to purchase this new vehicle began early in 2015.  Once SEMS had the necessary approvals, the process went through a competitive bidding RFP and a vendor was selected.

The Stratford EMS vehicle selection committee comprised of Volunteers, Paid and Command staff, worked hard to find a suitable ambulance which was also the most fiscally responsible choice. After careful consideration, the EMS vehicle Selection Committee choose a 2016 Type II Sprinter (Van) style ambulance manufactured by American Emergency Vehicles (AEV) of Jefferson North Carolina. By contrast, the cost of a Type III (Box Style Ambulance) is more than double at approximately $220,000. The Type II Sprinter (Van) Ambulance will have saved the EMS Fund an estimated $117,000 dollars while providing Stratford EMS with a State of the Art vehicle. The vehicle is 100% assembled in the USA.

“The Van style ambulance is a slight departure from the ambulances we’ve purchased over the past few years.  SEMS is a mixed, volunteer-paid ambulance service.  We’ve decided to maintain a mixed fleet of box-style and van-style to better meet the needs of our staff and community.  The plan was to replace the box style ambulances first.  This was completed last year.  Now we can begin replacing our Vans to complete the update of our aging fleet” says Michael Loiz, Director of EMS.

The new ambulance will ensure Stratford EMS continues to provide the Town of Stratford with the highest quality emergency care possible. The new ambulance is expected to be placed in service in mid-January.
