Full Time Paramedic Dane Dorta, EMT John Tamayo, EMT/Volunteer Supervisor Christopher Mancini and Stratford FD Captain Jermaine Atkinson were honored with the St. Vincent’s Medical Center’s “EMS Values Recognition Awards – recognizing those who go above and beyond”. The awards are given to EMS workers for exhibiting the St Vincent’s EMS core values of integrity, compassion, accountability, respect, and empathy while providing patient focused and selfless service.

Paramedic Dorta, EMT’s Tamayo and Mancinis’ recognition was in response to going above and beyond for a patient with diabetic ketoacidosis, altered mental status and combativeness. Management of the scene, the patient’s medical condition, and the complicated desires and emotions of family required the utmost patience, professionalism, cognizance of current sociopolitical issues, and respect for family in the decision making process. More than two hours were spent to calmly and compassionately address every need of both the family and the patient. All possible resources were recruited (including the patient’s primary care physician, law enforcement, and fire department) to assure that the patient received the necessary transport to the care that was needed while assuring that the patient’s loved ones understood every step of the process.

Captain Atkinsons’ recognition is for all his assistance to Stratford EMS throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. Captain Atkinson was nominated for this award by EMS Director Michael Loiz who described the Captain as someone who “consistently works to strengthen the relationship between EMS and FD. Additionally, he always operates with the highest integrity and with the general public at the forefront of his efforts. He is always ready to step out in front and do what needs to be done to ensure the safety and well being of others.”

“I continue to be inspired by and proud of the professional work that the Stratford EMS system team continues to demonstrate on a daily basis.  All of these providers from SEMS and SFD were recognized for performance that exemplifies not only the values of the Hartford Healthcare EMS program, but also the core values and principles of Stratford EMS and the Town of Stratford.” said Michael Loiz, Director of EMS.

Larry Ciccarelli, Public Safety & Emergency Management Director said, “Now more than ever, we appreciate the value of our first responders. The awards bestowed upon the EMS and Fire personnel during this period show the highest level of professionalism and devotion to duty. A humble thank you for a job well done”

“I congratulate the members of Stratford EMS who were recognized by St. Vincent’s at this ceremony,” said Mayor Stratford Mayor Laura Hoydick. “Dane, John, and Christopher are outstanding examples of the dedicated and passionate EMS crew we are fortunate to be blessed with here in Stratford. Jermaine is a consummate fire professional who put the public’s safety and well being first as his collaboration and support of our EMS department illustrates.

The ceremony was held at St. Vincents Medical Center in Bridgeport at 4:30p on May 12, 2021.
